Tacolandia is also putting a big emphasis on FUN, with live mariachi music, cocktails and a special awards celebration honoring LA’s best vendors (don’t forget to vote for FRIDA 😉 ). If that wasn’t enough, attending Tacolandia also helps a very good cause. This year, a portion of every ticket sold will go to benefit the El Pueblo Park Association, which honors the historic culture of Los Angeles.

Thanks To Everyone Who Celebrated TASTE OF MEXICO With Us!

29 Sep

Hello FRIDA Friends,

The 4th annual Taste Of Mexico Event has come and gone and WOW, what an amazing event it turned out to be! First off, thank you to everyone who came to celebrate with us. The response was overwhelming, with thousands of Mexican food connoisseurs descending upon downtown’s La Plaza de Cultura y Artes throughout the day and night. This year marked the first time that we extended the hours into the afternoon and we look forward to doing it again.

The new afternoon picnics allowed for more families to participate and created a unique Farmer’s Picnic experience with plenty of opportunities to interact with Vicente and the chefs from TOM’s partner restaurants.

And for those who love to dance and party, the evening festivities did not disappoint! A Poco No owned La Plaza’s stage, churning out Mexican-inspired rock songs throughout the night. It was amazing to watch the grounds transform into a lively dance floor, full of smiles, cheers and great energy.

As for the participants…Every station was jam-packed! Fans crowded for fresh ceviche, homemade tortas, and amazing desserts, which ranged from crispy La Monarca sweet bread to juicy Artesana Pops paletas.

We were extremely humbled by the outpouring of support shown to FRIDA. We ended up hosted two separate stations; one specializing in moles and one with traditional tacos. The big smiles, heartwarming compliments and station #selfies truly made our night, getting us face-to-face with old friends and several new ones!

It is also important to thank friends like the esteemed Mexican General Consul, Carlos Sada, who, for the second year in a row, took time out of his schedule to inaugurate the event.

Our friends at Univision LA also played a huge part in TOM’s success, publishing tweets and inviting us on their programs.

Believe us when we say this is only the beginning! Expect more TOM announcements in the months to come and continued celebrations of the food and culture of Mexico!

Join FRIDA This Thursday For Art & Food In Santa Monica

29 Apr

Greetings FRIDA fans,

We’ve got another big event this week that we would love for you to be a part of. Partnering once again with our good friends at UNAM Los Angeles, FRIDA will be co-hosting an amazing art exhibit by celebrated Mexican photographer Jose Del Rio.

Jose is responsible for some brilliant pieces of work (check out his site for a little taste) and this week marks the kickoff of an ongoing exhibition in his honor. His pieces have already toured San Antonio and make their official debut in Southern California this Thursday night.

And the best part of all is, the event will be minutes from FRIDA Westwood! Just head over to The Angel Station in Santa Monica at 2950 Nebraska Avenue. There will be luminaries from the art world, great photography to admire and….you guessed it, plenty of FRIDA food for everyone!

Plus, you will help support Mexico’s growing art movement, which as you can tell by our name, we are a big proponent of.

The festivities begin at 7:30pm this Thursday (May 2). We look forward to seeing you there!

Celebrate Valentine’s Day With FRIDA!

10 Feb

We’ve all done the heart-shaped candy boxes and red roses for Valentine’s Day. And as sweet as those gestures are, they can also come off a bit stale at times. That’s why your friends at FRIDA are inviting to spruce things up this Thursday with a romantic dinner for two at our Beverly Hills and Westwood locations!

For all of February 14, our FRIDA restaurants will be converted into Casas de Amor. That’s right, we’ll be lighting up the candles, setting a nice romantic ambiance and serving delicious appetizers (and desserts) that are made for sharing. And both of our locations offer unique “Date Night” options for you and your special someone.

In Beverly Hills, for example, you can stroll down gorgeous Beverly Drive, which will lead you right into Rodeo. Now we’re not sure how romantic you’re planning on getting this Valentine’s, but if diamonds are on your mind, there are plenty of upscale shops in the neighborhood.

FRIDA Westwood can offer more of a casual Valentine’s Day vibe. Our newest location is next to several impressive movie theaters, which can make for a great evening out (after you sample some delicious Mexican entrees, of course). Plus, there will be fixed menu options which can give you some great dishes at a reasonable price.

And while you’re at our restaurants, make sure to take advantage of our extensive wine menu. Couple your Arrachera Norteña with a Robert Mondavi, sip Chardonnay with Halibut Primavera, the choice is yours and the choices are all delicious!

So stop by FRIDA this February 14 and add some Spanish amor to your Valentine’s Day!

Formerly known as CASA AZUL CANTINA, FRIDA WESTWOOD is continuing the traditions that you know and love from our Beverly Hills and Glendale locations. You’ll be able to enjoy the same delicious menus, sip on the same delicious tequilas and soak up the same colorful ambiance that has made our brand an L.A. staple.

And now, we are much more geographically desirable to Mexican Cuisine lovers throughout the Valley and beach locations. Located at 10853 Lindbrook Drive, FRIDA WESTWOOD is right off the 405 Wilshire exit and smack dab in the middle of Westwood Village. It also has a gorgeous interior (courtesy of our friend Jose Antonio Gonzalez) and some of the best bartenders in SoCal.

Screen shot 2013-01-27 at 6.16.05 PM

Fans of the old CASA AZUL are in for a treat too. FRIDA WESTWOOD will still be honoring Thursday “College Nights” and giving discounts to customers with UCLA ID’s. We’re also keeping the giant HDTV’s, so you can enjoy Happy Hour sports games and special events (like our Super Bowl Party on February 2).

Screen shot 2013-01-27 at 6.22.15 PM

With an expanded FRIDA menu, the illustrious CASA AZUL ambiance and a lively atmosphere amid the movie theaters and boutiques, FRIDA WESTWOOD is truly the best of all worlds. So come on by, hand your keys to the valet and enjoy some of the finest Mexican Cuisine is L.A.!

FRIDA Gives Back…

6 Jan

Happy 2013 FRIDA fans! We hope you all had a safe and happy new year. As you can imagine, we had a very busy holiday season, with catering jobs, private parties and tons of Christmas tamale orders! But in between the long hours, we had the chance to do something that truly touched our hearts. Three days before Christmas, we handed out over 2,000 tacos to needy families at the Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission.

Los Angeles-20121222-00154

Our founder, Vicente Del Rio, was there in his trademark FRIDA apron, cooking up yummy chicken and carne dishes (and posing for photo opps with happy fans). The CASA AZUL chefs made sure to drop by too and added their signature spices to every taco handed out.

hope1

Of course, this special day wasn’t just about food. Hope of the Valley takes the charitable experience to a whole other level, with gift giving, live entertainment and big hugs from top L.A. celebs. And one of the biggest stars to drop by was the one-and-only Don Cheto! That’s right, El Hombre del Vozarrón stopped in and got the crowd roaring.

hope2

He also had a great time with the FRIDA chefs, smiling for pictures and teaching them a few of his “Ganga Style” moves. And what would a holiday handout be without the one-and-only Santa Claus? Yup, Old St. Nick made an appearance too and even sampled a few of our Tacos.

hope3

As you can imagine, this experience was the highlight of our holiday season and we hope to organize many more charitable events like this in the months to come. In the meantime, we highly recommend visiting the Hope of the Valley website to find out how you can help this wonderful organization.

FRIDA’s Restaurants Partner Up For ‘The Taste’

6 Aug

Have you made your Labor Day plans yet? Well cancel them immediately because we want to see you at the Paramount Lot September 1-3 for the 2nd annual L.A. Times TASTE Event! A true “feast” for the eyes and salivary glands, THE TASTE promises to deliver every type of culinary creation possible…and a ton of goodies from the FRIDA kitchen.

Joining with our buddies from the TASTE OF MEXICO (La Monarca, Guelaguetza and La Casita Mexicana), the FRIDA fam will be front and center for all three days of the event. Expect to see items from our CASA AZUL and FRIDA TACOS menus, as well as some “special” surprises (wink, wink). We’ll also be hanging with legendary foodie Jonathan Gold for Saturday’s “Flavors of L.A.” event.

And keep in mind, THE TASTE encompasses a lot more than appetizer samplers. This massive event hosts reps from 40 of So Cal’s top restaurants and has daily happenings like “Cocktail Confidential” and “Field To Fork.” There will also be tons of celebrity chefs in the house, including our very own Vicente Del Rio! So if you’ve got questions about how to cook up a homemade FRIDA quesadilla, don’t be afraid to ask.

Truth be told, we are absolutely thrilled to be part of this historic event and would love for you to join us. And best of all, it’s a only a small hint of things to come. That’s right, this November the TASTE OF MEXICO is coming back in a major way. But before all that goes down, bring your appetite to Paramount Studios on Labor Day weekend. You won’t regret it!

Hop In To FRIDA Easter Brunch This Sunday!

2 Apr

Happy April! We are extremely excited about what this month has in store at FRIDA, particularly for Sunday April 8! Oh yes, this year we’re continuing our tradition of FRIDA Easter Brunch, complete with mariachi music, Mexican delicacies, and special surprises from a fuzzy-eared icon.

This Sunday starting at 10am, we’ll be opening our doors for a delicious one-of-a-kind Brunch. As per usual, you’ll find breakfast items (including a few Easter Huevos), appetizers, and overloaded plates with nearly everything on the FRIDA menu. But what makes this weekend’s event extra special are the family-friendly treats!

For the adults, we’ll be serving bubbly champagne and mimosa glasses. And the younger Easter honorees will get to enjoy colorful balloons, special desserts, and a guest appearance by The Bunny himself! That’s right, drop in to our Glendale location and you can take pictures with “Mr. B” in the Bunny Bungalow. He’ll be hopping around the grounds from 12-5p.

There will also be plenty of music to keep things lively, with mariachi songs based around this very special holiday. And all of you churchgoers, don’t worry one bit. You can take your time at Easter Mass, as our Brunch will be going all the way until 4p!

So whether you prefer chocolate-dipped churros or chocolate candy eggs, FRIDA will have every holiday treat you can think of this Sunday (including surprise souvenirs for your Easter baskets). Call up the fam, come on down, and make sure to bring your appetite!

The FRIDA Holidays Are Almost Here!

18 Dec

Believe it or not, we’ve got less than a week to go until Santa arrives and you know he’ll be craving some horchata and churros before he climbs back up that chimney! So, why not prepare yourself for a festive Feliz Navidad with a little help from FRIDA?

Actually, we’ll get to our Christmas tidings later. The first order of business is for all of you Hanukkah celebrators. The festival of lights starts on Tuesday, so you get first dibs on all the holiday goodies FRIDA has to offer. It’s easy to build up an appetite on those “Eight Crazy Nights,” so may we recommend a few tasty Mexican options?

Night 1
– Sopa de Tortilla: Because let’s face it, it’s been FREEZING lately.
Night 2 – Tacos Combo: Chicken by candlelight, delicious!
Night 3 – Resplandor de Mango: Balance the diet with our fruit-filled salad.
Night 4 – Enchiladas Suizas: Piping hot and covered in tomatillo sauce!
Night 5 – Camarones al Ajillo: Sauteed prawns for noche cinco.
Night 6Mole Tasting: Menorah Mole!
Night 7 – Arrachera Nortna: One big hearty meal before the celebration’s over
Night 8 – Pastel de Chocolate: A festival of lights finale that’s perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth!

Now back to Christmas. Next weekend our little holiday elves are going to be working extra hard in the kitchen. While most businesses close down on the Dec 25, FRIDA Glendale’s Sunday brunch will be in full swing and you can bet we’ll be singing live versions of “Feliz Navidad!” But make sure to get there early, because we’ll be shutting down in the afternoon.

For those looking to spend the holiday at home, we highly recommend picking up a bag of signature FRIDA tamales. We’ve serving up both Green and Red tamales to help you coordinate with your festive sweaters. Plus, anyone going to 12am Saturday mass knows they make a great after-midnight snack!

All of you who celebrate the feast of Kwanzaa, don’t worry. We haven’t forgotten about you either. We’ll most certainly be open on Dec 26 and serving up yummy vegetable dishes (you MUST try our Al Tequila ensalada), Chicken Pozole (which is basically like a Mexican stew), and Pastel de Tres Leches for dessert.

And don’t get us started on New Year’s…We’ll have more exciting news on that holiday in our next post (Stay Tuned!). Happy Christmahanukkwanzaa FRIDA friends, we hope to see you in the restaurant this week!
